Antler or bone buckles were probably the first to be seen back in the hunting and gathering days. By the 1900's cowboys could be spotted wearing western style buckles. However, during this time buckles were rare and few cowboys wore belt buckles since most of them wore suspenders. The practical use of the buckles was to keep your pants up but they can also tell a story and in the cowboy world they can also show accomplishments.
